The short answer

Yes, clean after a pest control treatment, but not everything and not straight away. Three things decide it: what was applied, where it was put, and the instructions the technician gave you for that product on that day. Those instructions are the rule. This guide explains the reasoning behind the instructions you are likely to be given, so that they are easier to follow and harder to undo by accident.

In outline: stay out of the treated rooms for as long as you were told, and air them as advised. Then do a first, limited clean. Pick up dead insects, wash every surface that touches food, and clean the open floor. Leave the bait and the treated edges alone, which usually means cupboard hinges and corners, the line along the skirting, the floor behind appliances and the points where pipes come through the wall. The full clean of the home comes later, when the technician says the treated surfaces can be washed.

The reason: most treatments used in homes are not meant to kill on the day and vanish. They are placed where insects hide and travel, and they work for as long as they stay there. A mop along the skirting can remove in a minute what the visit was for.

IHR Dream Cleaning does both halves of this job: the pest control service, and the cleaning that goes before and after it. Pest control starts at AED 149 for a studio and AED 179 for a one-bedroom home, more for larger ones, and cleaning is priced by the length of the visit. How to book one around the other is set out further down.

Why the answer depends on what was applied

A technician rarely uses one method for a whole home, so the useful question is not whether you can mop after pest control. It is which surfaces carry something that has to stay. In general terms, these are the kinds of treatment used in homes and what cleaning does to each.

Kind of treatmentWhere it usually sitsWhat cleaning does to it
Gel baitSmall dots in hinges, cracks and cornersWiping removes it; cleaning sprays put insects off it
Surface treatmentA band along skirting, door frames and pipe entriesMopping and wet wiping wash it away
Dust in voidsBehind kickboards, inside wall and ceiling gapsWater spoils it; a vacuum takes it out
Bait stations and trapsAlong walls, behind appliances, in store roomsMoving or washing them breaks the placement
Airborne treatment for flying insectsSettles on open surfaces in the roomWiping food surfaces afterwards is expected

Gel bait: why it is left undisturbed

Gel bait is food with a slow-acting insecticide in it. It is put down in small dots where cockroaches or ants already hide and walk: inside cupboard hinges, where a shelf meets the side panel, behind the fridge, under the sink. The insect eats it and goes back into hiding, which is how bait reaches the ones you never see. It dries to a small dull dot that is easily mistaken for a stain.

Three things spoil it. Wiping removes it. A cleaning spray, a disinfectant or a household insect spray on or near it leaves a smell or a taste that insects avoid, so the bait is ignored. And crumbs and grease nearby give them something else to eat. This is why you are asked to keep the kitchen clean and dry, and at the same time not to clean the exact spots where the bait is.

Treated skirting lines: why they are not mopped straight away

A surface treatment is applied wet, usually as a narrow band where the floor meets the wall, around door frames and where pipes pass through, because insects travel along edges and not across the middle of a room. While it is wet it should not be touched or walked through, which is one reason for the stay-out time. Once dry, it leaves a deposit that goes on working when an insect walks over it, and water, detergent and scrubbing take that deposit off.

So the instruction you are likely to hear is to clean the open floor and keep the mop away from the edges for a period. How long that period is depends on the product, and the technician gives it. If you were not told, ask before you mop, not after.

Food surfaces: why they are wiped

A careful technician keeps treatment away from worktops, tables and the shelves where dishes sit, and asks for food and utensils to be put away beforehand. Even so, fine droplets can settle, and hands move from one surface to another. Anything that touches food or goes into a mouth is washed before it is used again. That costs the treatment nothing, because nothing useful was placed there.

What to ask before the technician leaves

The aftercare for your home exists in one place: with the person who did the work. At the end of a visit our technician explains what was applied, where, how long to stay out of each room and which signs would mean a follow-up is needed. Whoever does your treatment, do not let the visit end before you have these answers, and write them down.

  • Which rooms were treated, and with what in each: bait, a surface treatment, dust, traps.
  • Where exactly the bait points are. Ask to be shown, and take a photo of each cupboard so you can find them later.
  • How long everyone stays out, and whether that is different for children and pets.
  • How long to air the rooms, and whether the AC should be off or on while you do it.
  • When the open floor can be mopped, and when the edges along the skirting can be washed again.
  • Whether the insides of the cupboards were sprayed or only baited, and when shelves can be wiped and refilled.
  • Whether any mattress, sofa or carpet was treated, and when it can be vacuumed, washed or steamed.
  • Whether a follow-up visit is planned, and whether a deep clean should wait until after it.
  • The name of the product used, in case a doctor or a vet ever asks for it.

If someone else let the technician in

If a relative, a helper or the building's staff opened the door, the instructions may not have reached you. Call or email the company and ask for them before you clean, and before anyone sleeps in a treated room. Until you have them, treat every edge and every cupboard corner as something to leave alone, keep children and pets out, and limit yourself to washing the food surfaces.

The first clean, in order

The first clean happens when the stay-out time you were given has passed and the rooms have been aired. It is deliberately small. Its job is to make the home fit to cook, eat and walk in again without touching what was placed. The order matters: dry work before wet work, food surfaces before floors, and the floor last so that you do not walk dirt back over it.

  1. Open the windows or balcony doors for the airing time you were given. In an Abu Dhabi summer that warms the home quickly, so do it once, properly, then close up and let the AC bring the temperature back down.
  2. Put on household gloves, and keep one cloth or a roll of paper towel for this job only.
  3. Collect the dead and dying insects first, with a dustpan or the vacuum nozzle. If you wipe before you collect, you smear them.
  4. Wash the food surfaces: worktops, the dining table, the hob, the sink and draining board, a high-chair tray. Use warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse with clean water, then dry.
  5. Wash anything that was left out during the treatment and touches food: a chopping board, the kettle, the dish rack, pet bowls, a child's cup. Things that were shut in a cupboard or a sealed box away from the treated area do not need washing again unless you were told otherwise.
  6. Wipe the cupboard shelves as described below, staying clear of the bait points.
  7. Vacuum the floor, then mop the open area where people walk with a well-wrung mop. Stop short of the skirting, the kickboards under the units and the floor behind appliances.
  8. Empty the vacuum or change its bag, tie the waste up and take it to the bin room or the outside bin the same day, because egg cases and live insects can survive inside a vacuum. Wash the cloth on a hot cycle and wash your hands.

How to clean cupboards after pest control

Kitchen cupboards are where most of the bait goes in a cockroach or ant treatment, because that is where the insects live: in the hinges, behind the shelf supports and along the back edge. They are also where your food and dishes sit. Both can be respected, because the two are rarely the same few centimetres. Bait belongs in the cracks. Plates stand on the flat of the shelf.

If the technician sprayed inside the cupboards as well as baiting them, ask specifically when the shelves can be wiped and whether anything should go back before then. Shelf liner that you can lift out and wash is a common and sensible answer for shelves that hold food.

Old droppings are worth removing for a reason beyond hygiene. Cockroaches are drawn to the droppings of other cockroaches, which is part of how they find a hiding place that others already use. The easiest time to clear them is before the treatment, when the cupboards are emptied for it. Afterwards, clear what you can reach without disturbing the bait.

  1. Wait for the time the technician gave for the cupboards. It may not be the same as the time for the room.
  2. Open each door and find the bait points with a torch before you touch anything. Look at the hinges, the top inside corners, under the shelf edges and where the pipes enter the sink cupboard.
  3. Vacuum loose droppings, shed skins and dead insects off the shelves with the nozzle, keeping it away from the bait.
  4. Wipe the flat of each shelf and the cupboard floor with a cloth wrung out in warm water and a little washing-up liquid. The cloth should be damp, not wet, so that nothing runs into the corners.
  5. Stop a little short of the hinges, the corners and the back edge. Do not spray any cleaner into the cupboard: spray drifts, and it lands on the bait.
  6. Dry the shelves and leave the doors open until the inside is fully dry. Cockroaches look for damp.
  7. Put things back. Wipe the base of jars and tins, move opened packets of rice, flour, sugar and cereals into containers with tight lids, and throw away any packet that had insects or droppings in it.

Floors: when to mop and where to stop

The open floor can be mopped once the stay-out time has passed and the treated surfaces are dry, unless you were told to wait longer. The strip along the wall is the part to leave for as long as the technician said.

In practice, vacuum more and mop less for that period. A vacuum picks up dead insects, crumbs and dust along the edge without wetting it. A steam mop, a steam cleaner or a floor-scrubbing machine should stay away from treated edges altogether until you are told they can be washed: heat and water together remove a deposit faster than a damp mop does.

Spills do not wait. If juice or cooking oil goes down at the skirting, clean it up properly. A sticky floor feeds insects, which does more harm than losing a hand's width of treatment. Mention the spot at the follow-up visit so that it can be put right.

Dead insects, and why you may see more at first

Some pest activity may still be visible for a short period after a treatment, as insects are flushed out of their hiding places. That is normal and does not mean the treatment failed. You may see cockroaches in daylight, moving slowly, in places where you never saw them before. Do not reach for a can of insect spray. It adds nothing to a professional treatment, and used near bait it stops the bait working.

Collect the dead ones every day. Left where they fall they are food for ants and for other cockroaches, they are a hazard for a crawling child or a curious cat, and the remains break down into a dust that some people react to.

What to wipe and what to leave, room by room

The table is general. Your technician's list, for your home and the product used, replaces it wherever the two differ.

WhereAt the first cleanLeave until the technician says

Kitchen

Cleaning the kitchen every evening is not in conflict with the treatment. It is half of it. Wipe the hob while the grease is soft, dry the sink at night and empty the bin, so that the bait is the only food on offer. The hood, the wall tiles and the cabinet fronts are yours to clean as usual, as long as the cloth stops before the hinges. Why cockroaches return to a kitchen that is not kept that way is explained in the guide to cockroaches in Abu Dhabi kitchens.

Bathrooms and drains

Clean the toilet, the basin and the shower as you normally would. They are rinsed by daily use, and no technician relies on anything staying there. What may have been treated is the floor edge behind the toilet, the base of the vanity unit, the pipe entries and the surround of the floor drain, which is the route of the large cockroaches that come up from the drainage system. Keep the mop off those for the period you were given.

Keep water in every floor drain, since a dry trap is an open pipe, and ask whether the drains themselves were treated before you pour any cleaner down them. As on any other day, never use bleach together with a limescale remover or an ammonia-based cleaner: bleach mixed with an acid or with ammonia gives off a dangerous gas.

Bedrooms and soft furnishings

After a general treatment, a bedroom normally has only its edges treated. Change bed linen that was left uncovered, vacuum the carpet or rug, and leave the skirting line alone for the period you were given.

After a bed bug treatment the rules are stricter and specific to the method. The technician's instructions on laundering, vacuuming and what not to wash are part of the treatment. Do not shampoo or steam a treated mattress, sofa or carpet until you are told you can, and do not carry bedding to another room unbagged. The guide to bed bugs in Abu Dhabi goes through it.

Balconies, yards and store rooms

In a villa the accessible outdoor areas are often treated as well: the base of the outside walls, door thresholds, drains and the store room. Do not hose down or pressure-wash those surfaces until you are told you can, and check that the irrigation is not spraying the treated wall every morning. Rodent stations and traps stay exactly where they were put. If one is in the way, call and ask.

A deep clean: before the treatment or after it?

Both have a place, and they do different jobs. A clean before the treatment removes what competes with it and what blocks it. A clean after the treatment removes what the pests left behind. Booked the wrong way round, a deep clean can wash off a treatment that was applied the day before.

When to clean first

Clean first when the kitchen is greasy, when the cupboards are full of crumbs and old packets, or when the home is cluttered enough that the technician cannot reach the skirting, the back of the units or the space under the sink. A film of grease behind the cooker and crumbs under the toaster are exactly what stops bait being eaten.

This does not have to be a deep clean of the whole home. For cockroaches or ants in the kitchen, a focused kitchen clean is usually the right size: the hood and its removable filters, the hob and the wall behind it, cabinet fronts and tops, the sink, and the floor edges. Ask for the inside of the cupboards to be included, since you will be emptying them for the technician anyway. An apartment kitchen usually takes one cleaner two to three hours, which is AED 65 to AED 90 with your materials, or AED 105 for three hours with ours. If you would rather do the degreasing yourself, the method is in our guide to degreasing a kitchen.

Finish with enough time for the cupboards and the floor edges to dry before the technician arrives. Bait does not stick to a wet or greasy surface, and a surface treatment applied over water is diluted before it starts.

When to clean after

The full clean belongs after the treatment when the problem was established: cockroaches breeding in the kitchen, bed bugs in a bedroom, mice in a store room. Once the technician says the treated surfaces can be washed, there is real work to do: dead insects in places you could not reach, droppings and egg cases behind the units, smear marks on the cupboard walls and the stale smell that a cockroach problem leaves. A deep clean is scoped for those places: skirting boards, door frames, cabinet exteriors, kitchen grease, bathroom tiles and grout.

If a follow-up treatment is planned, ask the technician whether the deep clean should wait until after it. Washing every edge between two visits can remove what the second visit was going to build on, and eggs laid before the first visit may still be hatching. In the meantime the first clean described above, repeated as often as you like, keeps the home hygienic.

When you book the clean, say that the home has been treated, on what date, and what you were asked to leave alone. On arrival our cleaner goes through the home with you and confirms what matters most and what to skip. That is the moment to point out any bait stations or traps still in place.

Which order for which situation

Bed bugs are the exception to most rules: moving and washing things on your own initiative can carry them into other rooms, so there the technician sets the order as well as the timing.

Booking cleaning and pest control around each other

Because we offer both services, you can book both with us and say when you book how they relate: which comes first, and what the technician has asked for. What we cannot publish is a fixed gap between a treatment and the clean that follows it, because that depends on the product used on the day.

The two are priced differently. Cleaning is by the length of the visit, per cleaner: AED 55 for 1 hour, AED 65 for 2 hours, AED 30 an hour for 3–4 hours and AED 25 for each hour after that, with AED 5 more per cleaner-hour if we bring the materials. Pest control has a starting price for each size of home, from AED 149 for a studio to AED 229 for three bedrooms, with villas from AED 299, for one treatment by one technician. The price is confirmed before the visit, and where the job has to be seen first the inspection is free. Every figure includes VAT. What moves a pest control price is explained in the guide to pest control prices in Abu Dhabi.

A worked example

Take a studio with small cockroaches in the kitchen cupboards. A two-hour kitchen clean with our materials is AED 75, and the treatment starts at AED 149, so the two together start at AED 224. Afterwards you do the first clean yourself, and regular cleaning carries on with the edges left alone for the period the technician gave.

A larger flat with an established problem is a different sum. The treatment for a two-bedroom flat starts at AED 199, a follow-up may be recommended, and the deep clean at the end of it is AED 280 for a two-bedroom flat with our materials. Sofa, carpet, mattress and curtain cleaning booked with that deep clean is 10% less than when booked alone. There is no published bundle price for pest control itself.

Timing the two visits

A clean before a treatment can be close to it: the day before, or the morning of an afternoon treatment, as long as the cupboards are left empty and everything has had time to dry. A clean after a treatment cannot be squeezed in the same way. The gap is set by the product, so get it from the technician before you choose the cleaning date.

If you already have a cleaner on a weekly or fortnightly plan, there is no need to stop it. Move the visit if it falls inside the stay-out time: moving or cancelling is free up to 6 hours before the start, and AED 30 after that. A regular home cleaning visit is the easiest kind of cleaning to fit around a treatment, because it works on surfaces and open floors and can skip an edge without losing its purpose.

Payment for both is online by card. An hourly clean is paid for once we confirm it. A pest control job that is priced once we know the home and the pest is paid from My bookings on this website when the price is confirmed. Hourly visits can be booked up to 30 days ahead, so the clean after a follow-up visit can go in the diary as soon as you know the date.

Common questions

How long should I wait before mopping?

There is no single figure that is right for every product, and we do not publish one for that reason. The technician gives a time for going back into the room and, separately, a period for leaving the edges unwashed. If you only remember one of the two, call and ask for the other.

Do I have to wash all the dishes, clothes and bedding?

Not if they were put away. That is what the preparation is for: food in sealed containers or closed cupboards, dishes out of a kitchen that is being treated, clothes in closed wardrobes. Wash what was left out in a treated room and whatever touches food or a child's mouth. After a bed bug treatment, bedding is a separate matter and the technician's laundering instructions cover everything on and around the bed.

I mopped the edges by mistake. Is the treatment wasted?

Not necessarily. Bait in cupboards and cracks is untouched by a mop, and treatment inside gaps and under units is out of its reach. But the band along the open skirting may have gone. Do not try to replace it with a shop product. Tell the company what was washed and when, watch the activity, and let the technician decide at the follow-up whether that area needs doing again.

Can my regular cleaner or helper clean the next day?

If the stay-out time has passed, yes, with instructions. Ask for the surfaces, the bathrooms and the open floors to be done, and for the skirting line, the kickboards, the floor behind appliances and the insides of baited cupboards to be left. Leave a note on the kitchen worktop if you will not be home. A cleaner who knows about the treatment helps it. One who was not told will clean the way they always do, edges included.

There is a smell after the treatment. Should I wash it away?

Air the home for as long as you were advised, and longer if the smell remains. Do not wash treated surfaces to get rid of an odour without asking first. If the smell is strong, does not fade with airing, or anyone feels unwell, leave the room, call the company, and speak to a doctor about a person or a vet about an animal. A household with a baby, a pregnant woman, someone with asthma, or cats, birds or fish should plan the whole visit with that in mind: the guide to pest control with children and pets at home covers the preparation.

How do I know whether the treatment worked or the cleaning undid it?

Compare what you see with what you were told to expect. Slow or dead insects for a short period is the usual pattern. Lively insects in the same numbers as before, fresh droppings in cupboards you have wiped, or activity in a room that was clear are not. Note where and when, take a photo, and tell us if things have not clearly improved within the time the technician discussed with you, so that a follow-up can be arranged. Which pests tend to need more than one visit is covered in the guide to household pests in Abu Dhabi.

How to book the treatment, the clean or both

Book on the website or in the IHR Dream app. For pest control, choose the size of your home and describe what you have seen: which pest, which rooms, for how long, and anything you have already sprayed. For the clean, choose the hours and whether you want our materials. If one depends on the other, say so when you book, and say which should come first.

The pest control service page sets out what the visit includes and how to prepare for it, and the price list shows every cleaning visit by its length. We are open every day, 8 AM – 8 PM. If a point on the cleaning checklist was missed, tell us within 24 hours and we send a team back to re-clean it.

When you are ready, book online. Keep the technician's aftercare notes where everyone in the home can read them, and follow them over anything general you have read, this guide included.

Questions we get asked

How much does home cleaning cost in Abu Dhabi?

AED 55 for 1 hour, AED 65 for 2 hours, AED 30 an hour for 3–4 hours and AED 25 for each hour after that, per cleaner, when you provide the cleaning products and equipment; our materials add AED 5 per cleaner-hour. Every price already includes 5% VAT, so the figure you see is the figure you pay, with no call-out charge added at the end. A 2-bedroom apartment cleaned by one cleaner for 4 hours is AED 120, or AED 140 with our materials. Regular plans take up to 20% off every visit, and the price is identical on weekends, public holidays and same-day visits.

Is the price per cleaner or for the whole team?

Per cleaner. Each cleaner's visit is priced from the list by its length, so a team of 2 working 3 hours is 2 × AED 90 = AED 180 without materials, or AED 210 with materials. More cleaners finish sooner; and because a longer visit costs less per hour, one cleaner for 6 hours is a little cheaper at AED 170. Most customers still put two cleaners in a two-bedroom apartment so the home is done by lunchtime. You can book between 1 and 4 cleaners on a single visit.

What is the minimum booking?

One hour per cleaner, AED 55. For a whole home, two hours (AED 65) is the realistic shortest visit, and most apartments are booked for two to five hours. Deep cleaning and move-in or move-out cleaning need at least 2 cleaners for 3 hours each (AED 180 without materials), because those jobs cover the inside of cupboards, appliances, skirting boards and bathrooms in detail. The ceiling is 4 cleaners at up to 8 hours each in one visit.

What's included with materials?

Cleaning liquids and sprays, a vacuum cleaner, a mop and bucket, a broom, microfibre cloths and rags, and a step ladder — everything a normal apartment or villa clean needs, carried in by the team. Tall ladders and scaffolding are not included, so exterior windows above ground level and facade work are quoted separately. Choosing materials adds AED 5 per cleaner-hour to the visit price.

If I provide materials, does the team bring anything?

No. Without materials the cleaners arrive with their training and nothing else, so please have your own cleaning products, a working vacuum, a mop and bucket and some cloths ready before the visit starts. If something essential is missing the team cannot substitute it on the day, and the booked hours still run. If you would rather not keep supplies at home, book with materials (AED 5 more per cleaner-hour) and we bring the full kit.

Is there a travel fee?

There is no travel fee in the 18 areas we serve across Abu Dhabi, including Al Reem Island, Khalifa City, Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, Musaffah, Al Shamkha and Al Reef. Al Wathba, Al Shahama, Al Rahba and Al Samha carry a flat AED 20 charge per visit, added once no matter how many cleaners or hours you book. If your community appears on neither list, call us and we will confirm coverage before you commit to anything.

Do you charge extra for same-day, Fridays or holidays?

No. Same-day bookings, Fridays, weekends and public holidays are all charged at the standard rate, with no call-out fee and no peak pricing of any kind. We work daily from 08:00 to 20:00, and the only scheduling rule is that the work has to finish by closing time, so a long job simply needs an earlier start. Same-day visits need roughly 2 hours of notice for the team to reach you.

What if the job finishes early or takes longer?

You pay for the hours you booked. If the team finishes the agreed scope early, they stay for the remaining time and spend it on anything else you would like done — windows, a balcony, the inside of the fridge. If the property needs longer, the team leader asks you first, and the extra time is charged as the difference to the longer visit on the price list, in 30-minute steps. Nothing is ever added to your bill without your approval.

Do weekly or monthly plans cost less?

Yes. Regular visits cost less: 10% off every two weeks, 15% off weekly and 20% off for two or more visits a week (5% monthly). The discount comes off every visit and is rounded down to a whole dirham, so a weekly 2-hour visit is AED 55 instead of AED 65. There is no contract, no membership fee and no paying ahead for future visits, and any visit can be paused, moved or cancelled under the normal policy. Regular customers also keep the same cleaners wherever possible and a slot held each week.

How do I pay?

By card, online, after we confirm your booking. You send a request with nothing to pay; once we confirm it you pay from My bookings, on Nomod's secure payment page — we never see your card details. Jobs priced after photos (fabric care, AC ducts, repairs) are priced by the team first. Jobs of AED 1,000 or more take a 30% advance once confirmed and the balance online before the visit (a visit less than 24 hours away is paid in full, in one payment). The team comes once the visit is paid. There is no cash, card-on-site or bank-transfer option. All prices include 5% VAT, and a receipt for your booking can be printed or saved from My bookings.
